Christ University is a private 'Deemed to be University' in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Founded in 1969, it is managed by the priests of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous Syrian Catholic religious congregation in India. The college was granted 'Deemed to be University' status in 2008. It is one of the leading institutions in India and is usually listed as one of the best in most educational surveys. In 2014 India Today-Nielsen survey, Christ University was ranked in the top 10 in Science, Arts, Commerce and Law. In 2014 India Today ranking, Christ University ranked 1st in BBA, 6th in Arts, 4th in Science and 4th in Commerce and 10th in Law.

The university offers a range of nationally and internationally recognised undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes in a variety of academic disciplines including Law, Business Administration, Commerce, Management, Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences. Christ College was recognised by the University Grants Commission of India, (UGC) on 17 June 1972. It was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC), a UGC-funded body, in 1998 and reaccredited in 2005. Christ College has the distinction of being the first college in the state of Karnataka to be accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), for quality education. It is currently rated an A+ institution by the NAAC and was recognised as a College with Potential for Excellence
The Christ University, since 2008 has been making a conscious effort to establish the campus as a ‘zero waste’ zone, through a slew of scientific and environment-friendly measures. A number of initiatives have been put in place to promote the concept of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ and contribute mite to protecting the environment.
1. Waste Segregation:Separate dust bins for segregation and collection of wet and dry waste have been put up at all the food outlets in the campus, for the students to segregate waste at source. During the beginning of the academic year, fresher’s are sensitized on the importance of segregation
through posters, street plays and documentaries among others.
2. Paper Recycling Unit:In a pioneering initiative in an educational institution, a paper recycling unit was set up within the campus in 2009, where all the waste paper generated in the campus is recycled into handmade paper, to make different eco-friendly products. This unit also supports the livelihood of five women from economically backward families and residents of a nearby slum.
3. Sorting Stations:Dry waste collected within the campus, is segregated in these sorting stations and sold in the market to be recycled. The proceeds from the sale of waste provide livelihood support to five women from impoverished families residing in nearby slums.
4. Composting Unit:All the food waste and dry leaves generated in the campus is converted to organic compost in the composting unit located within the campus.
5. Water Recycling and Rainwater HarvestingThe campus generates a few lakh litres of waste water each day, which is treated and reused for gardening and other secondary purposes.
6. Bio-gas plantsA total of 3 bio-gas plants have been set up in the campus, which convert food waste, generated in the hostel and other eateries, into cooking gas. Two of these plants are small units, which are used as live models, to educate the students and community on the functioning of bio-gas models.
7. Solar EnergyThe use of solar energy has been promoted extensively in the hostels to provide lighting and water heating and reduce the dependence on electricity and promote usage of green energy.
8. Poly HouseA poly house within the campus is used to rear a large variety of flower plants, which in turn contribute to a green and pleasant ambience within the campus.
In addition to these, student volunteers from Centre for Social Action (CSA) are also actively involved in promoting the concept of waste management in the community, through various street plays, poster campaigns, house visits etc. CSA has also set up 10 eco-clubs in different schools where children are trained in various waste management practices. CSA is also working closely with the Bruhath Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and other Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) to promote the concept of Solid Waste Management (SWM) in different residential apartments and slum communities.
As a premier institution, Christ University has always stood for Excellence and Service in the academic arena. The Department of Commerce, which is a vibrant division of the university, equipped with the strong support of this vision, provides the proficient environment to nurture commerce professionals with a high level of knowledge and competence to effectively contribute to the society with commitment and integrity. Presently, the department has about 1900 students. The department is rated as first in Bangalore and fourth in the country for commerce education, as per the survey conducted by India Today (2015).
